Fun fact: Flamingos cease to be pink while raising their chicks. The production of bright red “crop milk,” a highly nutritious substance that they regurgitate to feed their young, temporarily depletes their own carotenoid reserves, which are what give them color. Only through sustained, gradual nourishment and recovery does the flamingo’s color return.
